Municipal Candidates Set For October Ballot

The candidates have been set for the upcoming October Municipal Elections.

 

In Soldotna, voters will be electing a new City Mayor.  Paul Whitney is seeking the seat previously held by Pete Sprague, who is not seeking reelection.

 

Two Soldotna City Council seats are up for election with Incumbent Pamela Parker running for Seat B, a three-year term and Justin Ruffridge seeking re-election to Seat F, which is also a three-year term.

 

In Kenai, the city is poised to elect two members to the Kenai City Council.  The incumbent councilors on the ballot are Henry Knackstedt and Tim Navarre, with challenger Teea Winger adding her name to the ballot. Voters will select two of the three to the Kenai City Council.

 

For Kenai Peninsula Borough Mayor, this years ballot will feature three names, Incumbent Charlie Pierce, Linda Farnsworth Hutchings, and Tony Nightingale.

 

Three seats are available for the Kenai Peninsula Borough Assembly.  The Kenai race will feature incumbent Hal Smalley, Richard Derkevorkian, and Jim Duffield. Sterling / Funny River will have one name on the ballot, Bill Elam, as current assembly member Norm Blakley has decided to not seek reelection.  In Homer only one name will be on the ballot, Lane Allen Chelsey; as assembly president Kelly Cooper has termed out of office and is running for State House.

 

Borough voters will also be asked to vote on two propositions;

 

Proposition 1: Western Emergency Service Area – Shall the Kenai Peninsula Borough be authorized to exercise powers to provide fire protection and emergency medical services through the expansion of the Anchor Point Fire and Emergency Medical Service Area to include the Ninilchik area as defined by Section 2 of Ordinance 2020-31?

 

Proposition 2: Repeal of Ordinance 2020-24 – Shall Kenai Peninsula Borough Assembly Ordinance 2020-24 “An Ordinance Amending KPB Title 4 Regarding Borough Election to Provide for Vote by Mail Elections, For More Time Between a Regular Election and Run-Off Election, and to Remove Proposition Statements” be repealed?

 

Four Kenai Peninsula Borough School Board seats and seven service area board seats will also appear on the ballot.  To view the positions available, click here.

 

Municipal Election Day is Tuesday, October 6th. Polls will be open from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
