Fairbanks Cancels Football Weekend: Homer Mariners-North Pole Game Cancelled

Author: Coach Dan Gensel |

As a precautionary measure by the Fairbanks North Star Borough School District, Fairbanks football teams North Pole and Eielson were advised to cancelled week two football contests against Homer and Valdez, electing to limit exposure of the football programs following a pair of North Pole players exhibiting COVID-19 symptoms following last week’s football contests.

According to Chris Perk, athletic director at Homer High School, Homer football will no longer be traveling to North Pole.

The Mariners will host Seward High School on Saturday at 2 p.m. for a varsity football game at Homer High School.

On Wednesday, the Fairbanks North Star Borough School District announced that officials were notified that two North Pole players were showing COVID-19 symptoms.  North Pole played Eielson last Friday in the Fairbanks area’s first football contest.  Both teams are limiting practice with North Pole cancelling practice for now and Eielson practicing under High Risk “Red” restrictions.

West Valley and Lathrop football programs are currently under a 14-day quarantine following notification of a positive test on a player involved in the Lathrop vs West Valley game last Saturday.
