Conference Basketball Tournaments Opened Thursday Featuring Kenai, Nikiski & SoHi

The Southcentral Conference and Northern Lights Conference basketball championships opened three-day, bracketed tournaments running through Saturday.  Kenai and Nikiski basketball teams represent the peninsula at the Southcentral Conference tournament at Seward High School.  The Soldotna Stars host the Northern Lights Conference tournament at SoHi.

Southcentral Conference Basketball Championships @ Seward High School

First Round Pairings*: Thursday, March 7th @ Seward High School

Nikiski Girls 56 – Houston 31

…Bulldog girls lead 20-0 after first three minutes.  Kelsey Clark lead with 16 points.  Nikiski advances to 3:30 p.m. Winner’s game on Friday.

Kenai Boys 38 – Redington 25

..Kenai controlled tempo throughout and built a 12- point lead after three quarters.  Andrew Bezdecney and Adam Trujillo each scored 12 for the Kardinals boys.  Kenai advances to the 5:15 p.m. Winner’s game on Friday.

Grace Christian 20 -Homer 16

Grace Christian Boys 47 – Nikiski 27

The Nikiski Boys, down by four at the half 18-14, fell by twenty to the Grizzlies.  The Bulldogs drew to within a point at 20-19 before Grace went on a 14-3 run.  Nikiski’s Jace Kornstad scored 11 points and Shane Weathers added 8.  The Bulldog boys play Redington in the 9:45 a.m. game on Friday morning.

Kenai Girls 35 – Redington 19

…The Kardinal girls held Redington to single field goals in both the second and fourth quarters as Kenai defeated Redington 35-19.  Jaycie Calvert scored 12 and Brooke Satathite added 10 for the Kardinals.  The Kenai girls advance to the Winner’s 7:15 p.m. game Friday against the winner of ACS vs Seward.

Anchorage Christian Boys 58 – Homer 32

Anchorage Christian Girls 71 – Seward 23

9:15 p.m.  Boys #2 South Seward (5-5) vs #3 North Houston (2-8)

Northern Lights Conference Championships @ Soldotna High School

The Northern Lights Conference consists of five schools including SoHi, Wasilla, Colony, Palmer and Kodiak.  The #1 seeds, both girls and boys, receive first-round byes through Thursday’s opening round of games.

The Soldotna Stars girls, 8-0 in NLC games, earns a bye and will face the winner of Thursday’s Kodiak vs Palmer contest.

The Colony boys, 7-1 in NLC play, earns a bye and will face the winner of Thursday’s Kodiak vs Palmer contest.

Palmer Boys 47 –  Kodiak Boys 43

…Palmer’s defense fuels a fourth quarter rally and a 47-43 victory for the Moose over Kodiak in the NLC opening boys contest.  Palmer will face #1 Colony on Friday in the semi-final contest at 2:30 p.m. at SoHi.  Kodiak plays on Saturday at 9:00 a.m. in the double-back round.
