The 2020-2023 Statewide Transportation Improvement Program Amendment 1 is currently available for public review and comment. Amendment 1 addresses scope, funding, and scheduling issues on various projects around the state, including new projects and the projects from the Community Transportation Program 2020 award cycle.
The Alaska Statewide Transportation Improvement Program is the state’s four-year program for transportation system preservation and development. It includes interstate, state, and some local highways, bridges, ferries and public transportation, but does not include airports or non-ferry-related ports and harbors. It covers all system improvements for which partial or full federal funding is approved and that are expected to take place during the four-year duration of the STIP.
The state has published Amendment 1 online. Among the local projects whose funding are impacted include:
- Rehabilitating almost six miles of the Kenai Spur Highway between Soldotna and Kenai, with the second phase constructing a five-lane highway to increase capacity and improve safety from Sports Lake Road to Robin Street;
- Constructing approximately 15 miles of new two-lane highway, with 12-foot driving lanes, paved shoulders, and passing lanes where necessary on the Sterling Highway;
- Rehabilitating pavement of approximately half a mile on Lake Street in Homer, constructing a sidewalk on both sides of the road, and improving the intersection at Pioneer to improve safety;
- Expanding the Sterling Highway Safety Corridor from Soldotna to Sterling as a four-lane highway from milepost 82.5 to 94;
- Repaving and improving part of Redoubt Avenue, continuing to where it becomes Smith Way at Sterling Highway;
- Constructing approximately 1.3 miles of paved and separated pathway along Bridge Access Road from Beaver Loop Road to the Kenai Spur Highway.
The public comment period closes at 5:00 p.m. on October 23. To submit comment, contact the State Department of Transportation and Public Facilities.
