Walmart should know by the end of the year if wild Alaskan salmon is welcome in its freezers, after debate about eco-certifications. The retail giant typically accepts all seafood certified by the London-based Marine Stewardship Council.
Stefanie Moreland, fisheries adviser to Governor Sean Parnell, explains why Alaska is no longer under the MSC label…
Moreland: “We found that eco-label movement has become more about brand protection and restricting market access than sustainability. In 2011, Alaska’s leading salmon producers decided to withdraw from the MSC program. They saw the Alaska brand being eroded and being replaced by a generic eco-label.”
Alaska now has its own certification program, which Walmart is currently evaluating. They expect a decision by January 1.
