A Borough Assembly ordinance which would have asked voters to decide on grocery tax exemptions has been defeated.

The convoluted tax went through several ordinances and amendments before finally passing with Assemblyman Kelly Wolf’s amendment to put the proposed 6 month tax/6 month exemption on the ballot this October. Then Wolf asked for reconsideration.

Asm. Wolf(K-Beach): “The people have voted on this issue in the past a couple of times and now we have this back before us and at this present time, I’d like to ask: what’s changed?”

That reconsideration vote was taken up last night and defeated 5-4.

Homer Assemblywoman Kelly Cooper…

Asm. Cooper(Homer): “So the people that are the most affected by this are the people that can least afford it. I just don’t believe that now is the time to have this tax on the ballot and I will continue to advocate to have this not pass.”

Assemblyman Brent Johnson said the issue is a “social” concern and should be decided by the public.

He voted in favor of the ordinance, along with Dale Bagley, Sue McClure, and Blaine Gilman.
