Visiting Fisherman Dies in Ninilchik Accident

State Troopers reported a visiting fisherman died in Ninilchik on July 4th.

Just after 7pm on Independence Day, 55-year-old¬†Lewis Byerly of Frederic, Wisconsin was a crew member on the F/V Anna Lane. They were just north of Ninilchik and 1.5 miles off shore when Byerly was pulling up the anchor with a motorized winch. His hand was caught in the chain, which pulled the rest of his body in, causing fatal injuries. The skipper called Troopers saying he couldn’t get Byerly out; he was deceased when emergency services arrived.

The United States Coast Guard and the Occupational Safety and Hazard Administration were notified. Byerly’s body was sent to the State Medical Examiner in Anchorage for autopsy.

Next of kin have been notified and Troopers say the F/V Anna Lane is returning to its home port in Homer.
