Vigil Tonight in Soldotna

A candlelight vigil will be held tonight in Farnsworth Park in Soldotna to highlight the issue of youth homelessness. The event is being sponsored by the local school district and Love, Inc.

Pegge Erkeneff with the school district explained…

Erkeneff: “You can’t learn [if you're hungry], it’s hard to get through your day if you’re hungry, and if you don’t know where you’re going to sleep at night, that can be really stressful. So just having some structure and having a caring, compassionate person who has some answers is really helpful.”

The district has a Students in Transition program which aims to help homeless youth…

Erkeneff: “They do get free school lunches, school supplies, and if a student has dropped out of school, or is new to the area and experiencing homelessness, and they really want to be in school, those are the youth that we specifically work with in this program.”

The vigil will be held from 6-7pm.
