Veterans Day is just over a week away, and a local vet was featured this week in U.S. Senator Lisa Murkowski’s regular Veterans Spotlight.
Colonel John Pollock of Soldotna served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1985 to 2010.
Col. Pollock: “I don’t miss the Marine Corps every day, but I do miss the Marines every day.”
Colonel Pollock described the camaraderie and intense bonds within the military, saying that Marines fight for freedom, but their primary goal is to protect the Marine on their left and the Marine on their right. He described one extraordinary battle…
Col. Pollock: “And it got pretty dicey there for a few minutes, and all I can remember were the wounded Marines getting up and rushing to the sound of the guns, and all you could see in the dark were these white bandages kind of fading into the dark as they moved forward, wounded, to engage the enemy.”
A Veterans Day assembly is planned for K-Beach Elementary on Friday, November 8 at 8am. Organizers say the focus will be on the children of local soldiers.
