U.S. Senate Unanimously Supports Secretary of Energy

Last week, the U.S. Senate unanimously confirmed Dr. Ernest Moniz as the new Secretary of Energy. As the ranking Republican on the U.S. Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, U.S. Senator Lisa Murkowski was recently given the opportunity to interview Dr. Moniz…

Sen. Murkowski(R-AK): “If you could just provide for the committee your general philosophy and views on natural gas exports, given what we know about the current reserves and the market conditions. Are these good or bad for the nation? Can you speak to exports specifically?”

Moniz: “there clearly has to be a public interest criterion applied. I believe the Natural Gas Act kind of suggests that one should move forward with licenses unless there is a clear public interest issue. I would also note that Secretary Chu did note at one point that things like cumulative impacts would be considered.”

In last week’s vote, Sen. Murkowski said she supported Moniz, a respected scientist, since he is “rigorously, robustly, free of preordained conclusions, and not afraid to speak up or speak his mind.”

Likewise, U.S. Senator Mark Begich supported the nomination, saying “As a leading professor and former Department of Energy official, he brings the experience, reputation, and skills to advance an all-of-the-above approach to our nation’s energy policy.”
