Today’s 12-Hour Commercial Fishing Period Moved to 10am

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game has announced that they’re modifying today’s regularly scheduled setnet period in the Kenai, Kasilof, and East Forelands Sections of the Upper Subdistrict Today, Thursday, July 11, 2013 to 10:00 a.m. until 10:00 p.m.

Driftnet fishing will be opened in the Expanded Kenai and Expanded Kasilof Sections of the Upper Subdistrict from 10:00 a.m. until 10:00 p.m. today as well.

Pat Shields, Commercial Fisheries Biologist with the Soldotna Fish and Game office said that the current escapement level of sockeye salmon into the Kasilof River is proceeding at a rate that is projected to exceed the Optimum Escapement Goal of 160,000–390,000 fish.

Sockeye salmon passage into the Kenai River is average for this time of year, and in order to provide for an orderly fishery and to maximize the harvest potential of Kenai and Kasilof River sockeye salmon, this regularly scheduled 12-hour fishing period is being modified from starting at 7:00 to beginning at 10:00 a.m. for both setnet and driftnet fleets.
