A Texas man was seriously mauled by a bear at the upper end of Skilak Lake on Tuesday, September 22.

Megan Peters with Alaska State Troopers said dispatch received the report of the attack on 47-year-old Gregory Mathews near Doroshin Bay at 6:17 pm Tuesday night.

Peters: “We got a report from somebody that came across the two hunters that were together. One of them had actually been mauled by the bear and the other one said the bear turned to come at him and he shot at the bear. I don’t know if the bear was actually struck or not but the bear left them and I don’t know how much time passed before someone else came across them and then the call was made to us.”

Matthews had been moose hunting when he was attacked by a brown bear with cubs which delivered serious but non-life threatening injuries.

He was evacuated by LifeMed to the hospital for treatment.

The US Fish and Wildlife Service and Alaska Department of Fish and Game will respond to the scene to attempt to locate the bear.

This attack follows two other recent maulings: a woman was mauled near Cottonwood Creek on Skilak Lake on August 4 and a man was seriously mauled September 14 on Funny River Road.

Both of those were determined by authorities to be defensive attacks.
