Members of the subcommittee tasked with creating recommendations for a Kenai event space have chosen  Millennium Square as the preferred outdoor gathering site.

Committee chair Brian Gabriel says the subcommittee chose those three contiguous parcels along the bluff after reviewing the qualities of 17 Kenai parcels.

Gabriel: “One of the things we identified in our last meeting was that there were some components that we would like to see in the park, obviously the platform stage was a consideration along with sound and lighting but some of the other things that were considered were core area location, walkability, environmental elements and aesthetics. So this area we feel meets the core elements that we’d like to see incorporated.”

At their Tuesday meeting, the subcommittee used large maps and scaled representations of components in a site-planning layout exercise.

Gabriel: “The stage, parking area, event area, vendor space, and move it around within the topographical map we had and come up with a rough concept of where we’d like to see these things located.”

For the subcommittee’s November 10 meeting, architect Chris Parker, with K+A Design Studios, volunteered to create some rough drafts of the proposed park and City Manager Rick Koch says he will bring costs estimates for the stage.

The subcommittee plans to present their recommendations to the Kenai City Council in January 2016.
