Subcommittee Created to find Feasibility of Event Space in Kenai

A Kenai Parks and Recreation subcommittee will be formed to investigate the feasibility of the phased construction of a community event space.

The ordinance was broadened to look at different locations around Kenai instead of limited to Millennium Square as it was originally introduced by Vice Mayor Brian Gabriel.

Gabriel: “My thought is is that as we bring everybody in on this we’ll try to determine certain sites that would be appropriate for this type of venue and then work from there. I’m sure there’s going to be requested to be looked at and that’s what we’ll do.”

No funding for the study has been requested but Gabriel has estimated conceptual designs may cost around $25,000.

Gabriel will chair the subcommittee and appointed seven members from around the community.

Gabriel: “If you look through the list there are some people who are familiar with sound systems and that sort of thing so they can bring that expertise on areas that might be conducive to good sound acoustics. We have an architectural representative, a finance person that’s on there, and a member of the Kenai Chamber of Commerce.”

The council amended the member list to include up to two open seats for interested members of the public.

The subcommittees aims to give their suggestions on location, site plan, phased construction, and cost estimates to the city council for consideration in the Fiscal Year 2017 budget cycle.
