If House Bill153 passes the Senate the same way it flew through the State House today, Minnesota Drive will soon be the Walter J. Hickel Expressway. Rep. Bob Lyn sponsored the bill, which passed unanimously.
Rep. Lyn pointed to Hickel’s rise from arriving in Alaska with only 37 cents in his pocket to two-time Governor of the state. Hickel, a boxer, also served as U.S. Secretary of the Interior under former President Richard Nixon and advocated for the development of the State of Alaska and the Circumpolar Arctic Region.
“Governor Hickel pushed hard to open Prudhoe Bay for oil development and oversaw the permitting process for the trans-Alaska oil pipeline. For these, and many other reasons, I believe it’s most important to honor a great Alaskan,” said Rep. Lyn.
