State Calls on Congress to Support Rare Earth Element Development

The State of Alaska is calling on Congress to support the development of Rare Earth Elements through Senate Joint Resolution 8, signed yesterday by Governor Parnell.

Jim Duffield is the Chairman of the local chapter of the Alaska Mining Association…

Duffield: “Look, 98 per cent of these elements are being mined now and processed now in China, and China has done a dramatic reduction in what they will allow to leave that country that is not in a finished product. So they’ve cut off, pretty much, the world’s supply of rare earth elements.”

According to sponsors, SJR 8 calls for the federal government, including the United States Geological Survey, to work with the State to identify REE deposits in the state, develop an REE information database, and promote the development of Alaska’s REE industry.
