Stars & Kards Football Split Games On The Road

The Soldotna Stars and Kenai Kardinals were on the road in week two of the high school football season, with non-divisional games for both programs.  The Stars and Kards, both in the Medium School classification, moved up to challenge Large School opponents Palmer and Lathrop, respectively.

 

SoHi 33 – Palmer 0     Friday Game Recap 

The Soldotna Stars put their unbeaten string of 21 games on the line against perennial power Palmer on Friday night at Machetanz Field in Palmer.

The win streak now stands at 22 games!

The Stars shut out Palmer 33-0 in a n0n-divisional contest; SoHi’s defense denying the Moose on every Palmer possession.

The SoHi’s defense recorded two interceptions, a fumble recovery and the defense on three, separate possessions turned Palmer away inside the SoHi ten yard line.  SoHi twice stopped Palmer on downs on the Star seven yard line and recorded an interception on the ten yard line.

The Stars offense pounded-out 312 rushing yards on 36 carries, lead by Drew Gibbs with 96 and two touchdowns and Ty Fenton with 93 and a touchdown.  Quarterback Brooks Furlong passed for a touchdown, 15 yards to Trevor Walden for the games first score; rushed five yards for a touchdown; threw for a two-point conversion and added an interception from his defensive back position.

Kenai 6 – Lathrop 7     Saturday Game Recap

The Kenai Kardinals shooting for their first win, again on the road in week two traveled to Fairbanks to play the Lathrop Malemutes.

The Kardinals and Malemutes played three scoreless quarters Saturday night before Lathrop downed Kenai 7-6.

The Kardinals scored on the first play of the fourth quarter as Chase Logan scored on a 32-yard run; following an interception by Logan which gave Kenai the ball on the Malemute 38-yard line.  Kenai’s extra point was unsuccessful, which would prove the difference in the final score.

Lathrop answered the Kenai score with a touchdown just a minute later; with the extra point, Lathrop leads 7-6.

Kenai is stopped on downs on their own one-yard line and Lathrop records a 7-6 victory.

 

Nikiski JV 16 – Houston 6    Friday Game Recap

The Nikiski Bulldogs played a junior varsity game at Houston on Friday night.  The Houston Hawks have opted out of the Northern Lights Conference for football and will play an independent schedule for 2014.  According to Dylan Hooper, Nikiski Athletic Director, Friday’s game will not count on the Bulldogs varsity schedule.

Nikiski touchdowns were scored by Luke Johnson.
