SoHi 78 – Dimond 76 Double Overtime
SoHi will play the Wasilla Warriors on Tuesday night at 8:30 p.m. in the 4A tournament’s semi-final round.
The Soldotna Star boys basketball team opened play at the 2010 ASAA 4A State Basketball Championships defeating Anchorage’s Dimond High 78-76 in double-overtime; the Star’s Blaine Carver scoring the game-winner with no time remaining on the clock in the second overtime period.
Tied at 76-76 and with Dimond possessing the basketball; Carver stole the ball and called timeout to set up the game’s final possession and final scoring opportunity for the Stars. With five seconds remaining, Boomer Blossom’s shot from eight feet out fell short and into the hands of Carver, who scored a layup as time expired on the game and on Dimond’s run to repeat as 4A state basketball champions.
The #6 seeded Stars battled throughout with the #3 seed Dimond Lynx, the 2009 4A state champion. SoHi trailed 30-27 at the half and by nine midway into the third quarter. Behind five three-pointers by Evan Whithrow (Evan hit eight for the game), the Stars built a 45-41 third quarter lead. The fourth quarter ended regulation tied at 63-63.
