Soldotna Police Release More Information on Coffee Shop Accident

9/7/2010

This morning, the Soldotna Police Department released further information into the accident that occurred at the Kaladi Brothers located next to the Sterling Highway.  Lt. Duane Kant says  72-year-old Alan K. Vanhorne was the driver of the 2001 Toyota Tundra pickup that ran into the building.  He had left the Soldotna parking lot, attempting to park in front of the building.  The pick-up was driven through the building’s exterior wall and into the coffee shop, where it came to rest.  Two patrons, 67-year-old Brian Barta of Soldotna and 57-year-old Keith Nichols of Kasilof sustained injuries in the collision and were taken to Central Peninsula Hospital for treatment.  Nichols was later medivaced to Anchorage for further medical treatment.  Vanhorne sustained no injuries in the collision, and alcohol was not a factor.  The accident was still under investigation.

This man should have his drivers license pulled. His mistake almost cost my uncle his life. Had it not been for the amazing work of CES he would have bled out from the cut artery in his head!

I agree. There should be some new laws passed directed at elderly drivers. This happens everyday, all over the country. I am glad your uncle is ok.

  • jim says:

I guess Mr. Barta and Mr. nichols should have their license pulled too, because their getting to old to be driving to the coffee shop

  • Melissa says:

Gee thanks Jim for ur wonderful lack of intelligence here. Mr Barta doesn’t drive anywhere…he walks everywhere he goes. As for taking licenses from the elderly…please!! I hope that when I get to be that she someone takes mine. When ur eyes & hearing are failing…time to get off the road. When you get to a point where the gas pedal & brake are confusing, give up the keys. Glad to hear that everyone is doing ok after this horrific incident.

Everyone involved was hurt by his accident. I’m sure the driver feels absolutely terrible and hurt by what he did, BY ACCIDENT, and his intentions were never to hurt anyone. Weird things happen in life, and yes, maybe he should not be driving anymore, but maybe he didn’t realize it until this happened. I wish the people in this community would learn to practice what they preach and stop with the low class, ignorant bible-thumping hypocrisy. It’s called COMPASSION, people, learn how to show it.
