The Alaska Department of Fish and Game has deemed the late-run sockeye estimates large enough to increase sportfishing bag limits and open the personal-use dipnet fishery to 24 hours per day.
As of 12:01 am Wednesday, July 29, anglers may bag six sockeye 16 inches or longer and have 12 in possession anywhere in the Kenai River from its mouth to the ADF&G marker at the Skilak outlet.
Under the Kenai River Late-Run Sockeye Management Plan the department has decided the late-run Kenai River sockeye salmon will surpass 2.3 million fish.
The Kenai personal-use dipnet fishery will remain open 24-hours per day until 11:59 pm this Friday, July 31.
After that, extension of the Kenai’s dipnet fishery would have to be ordered by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game Commissioner.
