On Monday, the bag limit for Russian River sockeye will return to three as the Early Run transitions into Late Run management.
As of July 9, 34,091 reds had escaped, falling neatly within the escapement goal of 22,000-42,000 Early Run Sockeye Salmon. At the same time last year, only 23,542 fish had gone through.
On June 21 this year, Department biologists were concerned that the 25,803 fish already up the river would overwhelm the system. To give some context, only 6,068 had been through as of the same date in 2012.
To curb the influx, the Department doubled the bag limit to 6. Since the Early Run finishes as of July 14, ADF&G biologists said they’re now moving back to normal restrictions.
