Single Fatality in Midnight Kenai Crash

Around midnight we reported the Kenai Spur Highway was closed at Mile 5, due to an accident. Kenai Police Sargent Ben Langham said the incident resulted in a single fatality…

Sgt. Langham: “At approximately 11:53pm, the Kenai Police and Fire Departments responded to a serious motor vehicle crash on the Spur Highway, near Lupine St. While on scene, officers determined that a black Nissan Pathfinder was travelling towards Soldotna when it left the roadway. The driver was identified as Gavin Koester-Backstrom, age 28 of Kenai. He was pronounced deceased at the scene, and his next of kin was notified. The cause and circumstances of the crash are still under investigation.”

Langham said it’s not known if weather was a contributing factor. Any eye-witnesses are encouraged to contact the Kenai Police Department at 283-7879.

The family also says Koester-Backstrom’s dog was in the vehicle at the time and hasn’t been seen since the accident. Anyone who may have seen a brindle Pit Bull-Boxer mix in the area is asked to call 303-656-8311. The dog was reportedly wearing a harness with a tag.

Koester-Backstrom’s girlfriend Kimberly Perkovich, said she’s already been searching for the dog, named Indy, who’s probably hiding…

Perkovich: “She was abused, and so she’s very, she’s not skittish, but she’ll probably hunker down. Her most likely behavior would be hunker down, roll-over if she even was to approach somebody. I just don’t know if she’d even approach a stranger, but she is friendly, and everything and if she does approach somebody, she’ll probably try climbing on their lap.”
