Seward’s Day Celebrated

Today marks the 146th year since the Alaska Purchase, an event commemorated by Seward’s Day.

Secretary of State William Seward signed the purchase after the Civil War for $7.2 million, which was thought to be an extraordinary amount. The purchase added 20 percent more land to the country, and today estimates place Alaska’s value well into the trillions.
