Kenai City Councillor Brian Gabriel said his operation is functionally two seasons behind as he goes into preparationg for this year’s set net fishery.
Post-season reports from last year showed 3.1 million sockeye were harvested, but East Side Set Netters only took home 67,000 their one regularly scheduled opening. Additional openings on the East Side resulted in a total catch of around 95,000 sockeyes, the smallest catch since 1966.
The bulk, 2.9 million, were harvested by the drift fleet.
Gabriel said the combination of pre-season investment and crippling closures last year has made him cautious this year.
