Senators To Reconsider School Costs

Senators will gather this August 20 and 21 in Anchorage to consider the cost of an Alaskan education.

The Senate Finance Subcommittee for the Department of Education and Early Development is planning a two-day meeting at the Anchorage Legislative Information Office, where they’ll discuss the Base-Student Allocation (BSA), transportation costs, school construction and the Teachers’ Retirement System (TRS).

The committee’s chair, Senator Mike Dunleavy from the Mat-Su Valleysaid he want to “dive deep into the budgets of our schools to figure out where we are spending our money.” Senator Dunleavy said the meetings would help inform Senate decisions in 2014.

The meetings will be held 8am to 5pm each day, with time for public comment. This meeting is the first of three two-day meetings. Two more meetings are planned for September and October.

Those who can’t attend in person, can watch online or go to any Legislative Information Office statewide to be teleconferenced in.
