Local Troopers introduced members of the Soldotna Chamber of Commerce to their new BearCat armored vehicle yesterday. State Senator Peter Micciche joined in, curious after he received numerous calls last week during the BearCat’s first outing in Homer.
Sen. Micciche(R-Soldotna): “Folks that were concerned about the appearance of the vehicle, whether or not it was a true assault vehicle. Came today to learn about the program, learn about why it’s effective, and what I learned is that the vehicle is not armed; however, it is armored. It’s there for the protection of the Troopers and first responders associated with a response to a residence or a facility. It’s really an effective way to disarm a situation.”
Sen. Micciche said he feels overall that the BearCat is a positive addition to the community.
Sen. Micciche(R-Soldotna): “It’s not armed for local warfare, if you will, and as long as we don’t see those weapons developing on a vehicle like this, then I’m much more comfortable than I was a couple weeks back.”
