Sen. Giessel Presents Legislative Citation

A rare sight at the Soldotna Chamber of Commerce today: the northern Peninsula state senator Cathy Giessel presented a Legislative Citation to Nikiski High School teacher Bob Bird.

We asked Senator Giessel what a citation represents…

Sen. Giessel (R-S. Anchorage): “Well, it represents acknowledgement of a person’s contribution to Alaska, to communities  It is a process where legislators craft the citation, and then it’s vetted through both bodies, signed by the Speaker of the House, so in this case Mike Chenault, and also the Senate President, and the legislator or legislators (sometimes it’s more than one) who proposed the citation.”

We asked Sen. Giessel why Mr. Bird’s teaching experience was regarded as a contribution to the state…

Sen. Giessel(R-S. Anchorage): “In  the guiding principles of the Kenai Peninsula School District, the goal is to foster productive students, productive citizens at the end of the day. And that’s really what teachers are doing. They’re inspiring. They’re not just giving facts, but they’re helping students see their place in the community, their place in life.”
