Secretary of Defense Reconsiders ‘Drone Medal’

After a push from U.S. Senator Lisa Murkowski, Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel is reconsidering a move to create a medal for drone pilots which would outrank the purple heart and bronze star.

Earlier, we spoke with Matthew Felling in Sen. Murkowski’s office, who explained the drone medal would be ranked seventh overall…

Felling: “Seventh still puts itself ahead of the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart. These are awards given to people who have either put their body in harms way, in front of a bullet, in front of a IED in modern warfare, or have died. What we want the Defense Secretary to look at is just, give this the smell test and say, cyber war, drones are an incredibly important form of our new military strategy, but does it deserve to be ahead of traditional combat?”
