Second Avalanche Hits Seward Highway

3/9/2010

A second avalanche has hit the Seward Highway south of Girdwood at Milepost 87.  This has prompted the Department of Transportation to close the highway at Milepost 39 , which is the intersection of the Seward Highway and the Sterling Highway.  The DOT says it is installing message boards at Moose Pass on the Seward Highway and at Sterling Highway’s Milepost 45 for all northbound traffic notification about the Seward Highway closure.

The Department of Transportation says this should give all vehicles ample time to turn around.  It should also give motorists refuge due to the closure.    Barricades and signs will be placed near the Seward Highway Milepost 39.  Southbound traffic on the Seward Highway is being opended for traffic on the road south of the avalanches.
