Phone threats made to Kenai Peninsula schools on Wednesday were far from an isolated incident. Staci Feger-Pellessier with the FBI in Alaska said calls were also made to schools in Juneau and Talkeetna, but they may be part of a broader phenomenon…
Feger-Pellessier: “There appears to be similar threats being made in different schools around the United States, so we are looking to see if some of the threats here in Alaska may be connected to some of those school threats.”
That same day threats were also phoned in to Washington state schools. Parents in those districts were told 300 schools across the nation received the same digitized calls.
News agencies from Arizona to Pennsylvania have been reporting that “an electronically generated voice [is] threatening to harm children.” They say the voice mentions someone on a rooftop or someone with a bomb and uses the words “kill a lot of kids.”
While the threats don’t appear to be tied to a specific location, it’s also possible they’re not tied to a specific time. Some news agencies reported similar calls dating back several years in numerous states.
Megan Peters with the Alaska State Troopers said all agencies are still taking the threats seriously. Even though the investigation is under federal jurisdiction, she says Troopers will respond…
Peters: “Troopers will still respond, local police will still respond. Certainly the welfare of our children in our communities is very important to us, so we will respond whenever a report is made and we are encouraging school districts if any of their schools get such a call or any kind of threat to them to immediately notify law enforcement.”
