Area schools on watch this week, but law enforcement officers have determined that the alleged safety concern was “not credible.”
Pegge Erkneff with the District said the threat was “general” in nature and made towards Soldotna area schools.
Erkeneff: “If there had been a lockdown at any school, we would have immediately had notification going to parents, but the timing of those communications was different throughout the Peninsula, so we did have parents saying, ‘I didn’t hear anything,’ and other parents saying, ‘I heard something,’ and then the lack of information that we were able to give was challenging for parents. They wanted to know. So we were just working in conjunction with law enforcement and we were following their lead and asking our parents to trust us. We learn from everything and we do recognize and appreciate the work of law enforcement. We put student safety as our number one priority and we’re working to improve our communications.”
The security watch was cancelled this morning and schools are back to normal, with the exception of the 90 minute early release scheduled for this afternoon.
