School Board to Honor Local Teen’s National Volunteering Award

During this Monday’s regularly scheduled meeting of the local school district, Shaylee Rizzo, a senior at Nikiski Middle/High School, will be presented with an engraved silver medallion to recognize her selection as one of Alaska’s top two youth volunteers of the year though the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program.

Shaylee, as we previously reported, is being honored for her “Missy the Moose” public service campaign. The program is intended to raise children’s awareness of the dangers of cars hitting moose on Alaskan highways.

As a State Honoree, Shaylee will receive $1,000 and an all-expense-paid trip in early May to Washington, D.C., where she will join 101 other top honorees from across the country for several days of national recognition events. During the trip, ten of them will be named America’s top youth volunteers for 2013.
