The Kenai Peninsula Borough School District, Kenai Peninsula Education Association, and the Kenai Peninsula Education Support Association is set to begin negotiations.

Pegge Erkeneff with the district explained what topics are covered during collective bargaining.

Erkeneff: “The big issues for discussions always are compensations, employee benefits, healthcare and then the work environment that one or both sides want to address for possible revisions. And so what we’re doing is we’re getting ready to meet with the associations and by state mandate, by state law, we open up a period of public comment and it’s an opportunity for the public to share their thoughts on the issues that get addressed in collective bargaining, those are all going to be collected, we’re going to keep that comment period open throughout the entire negotiation period and then those comments are going to be given to the School Board.”

Those two initial offers will be exchanged February 9 and public comment may be submitted online or in person at school board meetings, the next of which is February 2.
