School Board Approves Soldotna School Configuration Plan

The Kenai Peninsula Borough School Board met last night, and approved a plan for the future configuration of Soldotna area schools, Todd Syverson is the principal of Soldotna High School, who has been very active in the proposals throughout the years…

Syverson: “Our board voted last night, with the concept of having one high school. The administration now is going to be working on what will happen with the middle schools, or the 9th grade house, there’s still a question out there that needs further study. What the school board did last night, is that they gave us a direction to move with the one high school concept, right the date is set for 2015, but there’s some room in there if the district decided to move to 2014 to start this concept that they could, but there’s a lot of planning that needs to be considered, and a lot of work that needs to be done. So the district administration will be reviewing that to see when the start date of the one high school concept will take place.”

The board held a public hearing last night before the meeting, which drew a large crowd to weigh in on the future of the schools. James Gallagher is a sophomore at Skyview…

Gallagher: “It’s my home, I love the community there, the teachers are great, I wouldn’t have excelled as well as I have if it wasn’t for my teachers and my coaches there. It’s not just about Skyview, because a lot of people are going to be affected this way, and I think that not everybody has been as active as they should have been in this.”
