Over a dozen people gathered near Alaska’s Capitol to show support for same-sex marriage on the same day the U.S. Supreme Court heard oral arguments on the issue.
Some state lawmakers also attended and the group sang to the tune of The Supremes’ “Stop in the Name of Love”, but with some creative lyrics to illustrate their point.
The rewrite called on Governor Bill Walker’s administration to stop actions that oppose same-sex marriage.
Earlier this spring Alaska’s Attorney General Craig Richards signed onto an amicus brief to the U.S. Supreme Court that supported same-sex marriage bans.
Richards: “My duty as attorney general is to defend the state constitution and the state constitution is clear. So barring a federal decision by the United States Supreme Court that makes clear that the federal constitution trumps the state constitution, it’s my duty to defend the state constitution.”
The state filed an appeal over the decision that struck down Alaska’s ban on same-sex marriage but later requested that that be put on hold pending a decision from the U.S. Supreme Court.
As we previously reported, a petition to Governor Walker to withdraw Alaska from anti-same-sex-marriage actions has garnered over 1,200 signatures now.
