The Funny River Road area of the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge will be opening to personal use firewood permits Saturday, June 1.
The Refuge says areas open to firewood collection have cut wood piled along the right-of-way, as a result of fuel break construction and maintenance.
Permits can be obtained at the Refuge Visitor Center on Ski Hill Road in Soldotna, from 8am to 4:30pm weekdays and from 9am to 5pm Saturdays.
Specific regulations allow five cords of firewood per permit until September 30th of this year. No fees will be charged, but permit holders are required to stack debris and stay at least 200 feet away from active cutting. The wood may not be sold or traded, and all other cutting is prohibited, except for the use of down, dead wood for campfires.
