Refuge Open to Snowmachining

The Kenai National Wildlife Refuge is now open to snowmachining in all areas typically open for that purpose.

Refuge Manager, Andy Loranger, said snowmachiners will not be allowed around the Headquarters tract on Ski Hill Road, Skilak Loop Special Management Area, Swanson River and Swan Lake Canoe Systems, Wolf Lake pipeline corridor, and all areas above timberline except in the Caribou Hills.

Snowmachiners are encouraged to contact the Refuge Headquarters where boundaries are unclear.

Snowmachiners are asked to be respectful of their surroundings and avoid windblown areas with only a light covering of snow. Avoid moose and other wildlife whenever possible and use caution when traveling over rivers and streams which may not be fully frozen.

For more information, call the Refuge Headquarters at (907) 262-7021 or on Ski Hill Road in Soldotna. You can also visit them online.
