Public Hearing on Bagley Grocery Tax Substitute

The Borough Assembly will hear more public testimony on the Dale Bagley non-prepared food tax ordinance that tonight’s meeting.

Joe Ray Skrha has worked with the opposition of the ordinance…

Skrha: “As I was telling you, the issue of sales tax on food is something that I believe is morally repugnant to tax food. When you tax food, you’re taking the people who are the most vulnerable in our society, meaning: families, mothers who have three kids and are working, old people, people who are struggling, and you say, we’re going to take three or four days of food away from you per month so we can charge sales tax.”

The item was postponed at the March 17 borough assembly meeting after members voted to replace the original Blaine Gilman ordinance, which would implement the tax year round, with the Bagley ordinance, which would tax all foods six months out of the year.

Tonight’s meeting will convene in the Borough Assembly Chambers at 6 pm.
