Previous Warm Spell Could Cause Bear Activity

As we reported late last week, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game has been notified of an active brown bear in the Nikiski area. The bear was seen in the are around Mile 27 of the Spur Highway near the Aurora Heights Subdivision. During our conversation with Jeff Selinger an area management biologist with the Soldotna office, we asked if this activity is normal during this time of year…

Selinger: “It can be, what we had is that we had that warm spell of weather not too long ago when we had the rain. Not all bears dig adequate dens, it’s quite possible that, that warm spell we had woke this bear up and has it out moving around. Generally speaking, if they don’t have a food source at this time, they’ll go find another place to settle in for the rest of the winter.”
