Alaska’s known for its high percentage of veterans, and within the state, the Kenai Peninsula ranks fourth overall for the largest number of veterans in the area.
A report released this month by the Alaska Department of Labor and Workforce Development shows Anchorage was overwhelmingly the most popular destination for veterans, with 30,874 living within the municipality. Fairbanks North Star Borough followed with 11,584, then the Matanuska-Susitna Borough with 9,538.
Then there’s the Kenai Peninsula, home to 5,776 veterans, making up 14 percent of the local population.
According to the report, unemployment among veterans is slightly lower than the overall rate. In 2012, veteran unemployment was 6.3 percent, and 6.9 percent for non-veterans.
