5/31/2010

State Troopers say a woman from Washington, D.C. was killed this weekend on the Sterling Highway in a multi-car accident.  Troopers say the accident occurred at 8:07 p.m. on Saturday night at Mile 163.5 of the highway.

The troopers investigating the accident say that four vehicles were involved in the crash, and one person was entrapped.  A GMC truck was driven by 46-year-old Alfred Jones of Kenai.  The truck was northbound and several vehicles were traveling south.  The GMC truck crossed the centerline into the southbound lane.  Numerous vehicles took evasive action to avoid a collision.  29-year-old Daniel Fairchild was driving a Subaru Forester, and, 25-year-old Kathleen Benz, of Washington D.C. was a passenger.  Fairchild attempted to avoid a collision with the GMC truck, but was unsuccessful.  The two vehicles collided on their passenger sides.  Four people were transported to the hospital.  Benz was later pronounced deceased at South Peninsula Hospital in Homer.  The names and conditions of the others injured in the accident were not immediately released.
