Oilers Eliminated At NBC World Series With 5-3 Loss To Bombers

The Peninsula Oilers suffered a second loss and were eliminated from the National Baseball Congress World Series in Wichita, Kansas, dropping a 5-3 decision to the Sedalia Mo. Bombers on Sunday.  The Oilers finish tournament play with a 3-2 record.

 

The Oilers scored a single run in the first and second innings for an early 2-0 lead.  In the 5th inning, the Bombers scored four runs on five hits , including two doubles and a home run.  The Bombers added a solo home run in the 6th inning for a 5-2 lead.

In the top of the 9th inning, the Oilers get the first two runners on base and score one run to draw to within two at 5-3.  However, three straight outs and the Oilers leave two on base in a 5-3 loss.

 

The Oilers’ tournament run included a first round loss, three-straight wins, and a final Sunday loss.

Oilers 4 – Hornets 3:  Fourth Round 

The Peninsula Oilers rallied in the bottom of the ninth inning to defeat the League City Hornets of Texas 4-3; a game-winning walk-off single scored Mike Miller for the victory.

 

The Oilers opened the game with three runs in the 1st inning on two hits and a pair of walks.  Pablo Burmudez drove in Tyler Grimes and Ryan Gebhart.  Mike Miller picked-up an RBI scoring James Lilly.  The Oilers were held scoreless for the next seven innings.

 

In the bottom of the ninth, after allowing a three-run homerun to League City in the eighth inning, which tied the game at 3-3;  Miller lead off with a bunt single.  The Oilers loaded the bases with a walk to Sean Madigan and a walk to Ryan Gebhart.  With two outs, James Lilley drove a ball deep to left field for a walk-off RBI single and an Oiler win 4-3.

 

Geoff Broussard pitched five scoreless innings, Mike Wolford and Sergio Marquez combined for 1 2/3 of scoreless pitching.  Jorge Marbon, in the eighth allowed a bunt single, a walk, struck out two;then, gave up a three-run homerun before striking out the side.  Chad Smith picks up the win, pitching a scoreless, ninth inning.  Five Oilers pitchers combined for 12 strikeouts.

  

Oilers 3 – San Diego Force 1: Third Round

The Peninsula Oilers defeated the San Diego Force 3-1 on Friday, and advance to a Saturday elimination game.  Eddie Orozco pitched 5 1/3 scoreless innings and Chad Smith picked-up the save.   The Oilers scored a single run in the 2nd inning, with Sean Madigan scoring on a wild pitch.  In the 6th inning, Pablo Bermudez doubled and scored on a Mike Miller sacrific fly.  James Lilley hit a solo homerun in the 7th inning for the Oilers final run.

  

Oilers 8 – Rock City 0: Second Round

The Peninsula Oilers, overpowered the Rock City Red Sox 8-0 in an elimination contest on Thursday.

The Oilers scored three runs in the 3rd inning and added four runs in the 5th inning and a single run in the sixth for an 8-0 victory.  Jake Sabol threw six shutout innings, allowing only two hits.

 

Oilers 3 - Wichita Sluggers 6: Opening Round

The Peninsula Oilers, opened tournament play with a a 6-3 loss to the Wichita Elite Sluggers.

The Oilers opened with a run in the second inning and a run in the third inning for a 3-0 lead.  The Oilers loaded the bases in the 2nd, 3rd and 5th innings; however, managed only three runs and hit into a triple-play in the third.  The Oilers offense was held in check for the remainder of the game.  Kellen Moen started and pitched four quality innings allowing one run and striking out six.

 

The Sluggers collected 13 hits, including two triples and two doubles for six runs.
