Not All Bears Will Be Costumes on Halloween

10/29/2010

Parents, beware of bears this weekend while children are trick-or-treating for Halloween. Wildlife Technician Larry Lewis of the Alaska Department of Fish and Game is warning residents in the area of Ciechanski, Woods Drive, Strawberry Road and the Sterling area that bears have been spotted in recent days. Lewis says many of the bears have been seen going through trash that was left out by homeowners.

Lewis says it’s a very bad time to be leaving trash out when children will be outside trick-or-treating. Lewis says parents can carry bear spray for protection; but, it is more important to urge everyone to put trash away. Lewis says people should not assume that the bears are hibernating for the winter. With the current weather and the problem of trash, the bears are still in the area. He said, since working on the Kenai Peninsula, he has never seen a month where bear calls don’t take place.

I’ve been on the peninsula for 25 years and know that just because a Bear is in the area doesn’t mean that garbage is left out to draw them in. We need to keep garbage cleaned up but all the areas listed have had Bear problems since before I moved here and hardly anyone lived there in those early years.

Bears have migration paths just like many animals and if you live in this migration path and have a house along it you will see Bears, garbage or not.

It should also be mentioned that if you do encounter bears that calling fish and game is a waste of your time. I do live in the Woods area and when we had a bear issue early this week I called fish and game. Our garbage is completely contained in our garage and still the bear tore through our storage in the back and the neighbor’s as well. This is not to first time he has been at our house and he is getting more aggressive. When I called fish and game I was told “I dont know what you expect me to do ma’am” and that if I have a problem then it is MY responsiblity as a neighbor to contact all my neighbors to ensure their trash is properly contained because “peer pressure works better than him talking to them”. AND that next time if he is aggressive to go ahead and shoot it because “he lives all the way out in Kasilof and cant do anything.”

Nice to see our tax dollars at work.

Alaska is known to the world that bears live here. You are the one who decided to live in the woods, what do you expect? I know no one wants to have their property ruined or live in fear, but you had to of known what to expect living in the woods, right? Quit complaining to fish and game, quit complaining.

  • Edward says:

Don’t complain, just shoot them when they come into your yard.
