The Soldotna Stars fell to the Wasilla Warriors 3-2 in the 2013 North Star Conference Hockey Championship Game; both teams advance to the ASAA 4A State Hockey Championships, scheduled for Thursday-Saturday, January 7-9 at the Menard Arena in Wasilla.
Championship Game: SoHi 2 – Wasilla 3
The Soldotna Stars scored a first-period goal on one lone shot to take a 1-0 lead after one period of hockey. In the second period, Wasilla scored a pair of goals for a 2-1 advantage. The Stars tied the game mid-way through the final period at 2-2. With both team skating a man short, Wasilla scored the game-winner with less than 2:00 remaining in regulation.
SoHi 4 – Palmer 2
The Soldotna Stars downed Palmer on Friday night at the Menard Arena. SoHi advances to the championship final on Saturday to face Wasilla.
Wasilla 3 – Homer 0
Kenai 0 – Homer 5
The Kenai Kardinals, seeded #5, faced-off against #4 seed Homer in the 5:00 p.m. tournament opener.
Kenai fell 5-0 to the Mariners; as both teams combined for over 60 shots. Homer received a three-goal, hat trick from Tommy Bowe. The Kardinals are eliminated from the NSC tournament and the Mariners advance to a 5:00 p.m. game against Wasilla.
Colony, #3 seed, faces Palmer, #6 seed, in the 7:15 p.m. game.
The Soldotna Stars, ranked #2, have a first round bye and open their tournament on Friday at 7:15 p.m. against the winner of the Colony/Palmer game. The Wasilla Warriors, unbeaten in conference play, open against the winner of the Kenai/Homer game at 5:00 p.m. Friday.
The Soldotna game will be broadcast on ESPN 1140AM.
