The 2013 Northern Lights Conference Soccer Championships move to championship Saturday; Wasilla and Colony boys and SoHi girls play for championship and the Kenai girls and SoHi boys play in third place games.
NLC Semi-final Round Results
Kenai Girls 0 – Colony 2
The Kardinal girls fell to Colony 2-0 in Friday’s semi-final game. Kenai must defeat Grace Christian at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday in the third-place game on Saturday to earn a state berth.
SoHi Girls 3 -Grace Christian 1
The SoHi girls handled Grace Christian 3-1 in the winner’s bracket game on Friday; SoHi advances to the NLC championship game on Saturday.
SoHi Boys 2 – Wasilla 3
The Soldotna boys soccer team battled Wasilla in the winner’s-bracket game on Friday, falling to the Warriors 3-2. Wasilla earns a state-berth for the sixth-straight year and will face Colony for the NLC title. The Stars will double-back into the third-place game on Saturday with a final state slot up for grabs.
The Stars play Homer at noon on Saturday at the Kenai Soccer Complex.
Colony 4 – Homer 0
Colony advances to play Wasilla in boys championship game; Homer plays SoHi at noon.
NLC First Round Results
SoHi Girls 3 – Wasilla 1
The Soldotna girls, #1 seed from the southern division of the NLC, defeated Wasilla 3-1 in opening round, girls tournament action. The SoHi girls rallied from a 1-0 halftime deficit with three second half goals. SoHi goals were scored by Taryn McCubbins, with two goals, and Miranda Wolfe. The Stars advance to a semi-final game on Friday against Grace Christian School at 3:00 p.m. The Grizzlies defeat Homer 5-1 on Thursday.
SoHi Boys 5 – Palmer 1
The Soldotna boys dominated play against Palmer leading to a 5-1 victory for the Stars in the boys tournament’s first round. The Stars received a pair of goals from Cory Carver and single goals from Cameron Grothe, Ty Fenton and Daniel McElroy. SoHi will play in the winner’s bracket, semi-final game on Friday against Wasilla at 5:00 p.m.
Kenai Girls 4 – Palmer 1
The Kardinal girls opened tournament play with a commanding 4-1 victory over Palmer. Kenai netted goals by Cassie Ross, Jenna Calhoun, Brandi Wagoner, and Logan Tuttle. The Kenai girls continue tournament play on Friday with a winner’s bracket game against Colony at 11:00 a.m.
Kenai Boys 1 – Wasilla 4
The Kardinal boys suffered a first-round loss to the Warriors 4-1 on Thursday. Kenai managed a single goal by Josh McGee. The loss eliminated the Kardinals from the NLC tournament. Wasilla advances to play SoHi on Friday at 5:00 p.m.
Nikiski Girls 1 – Colony 7
The Nikiski girls fell to the Colony Knights 7-1 on Thursday, eliminating the Bulldog girls from tournament play.
Nikiski Boys 0 – Colony 7
The Bulldog Boys were shutout 7-0 in Thursday’s first round of the NLC tournament; Nikiski is eliminated from tournament competition.
