The Nikiski Bulldogs wrestling team outpointed Valdez for the Denali/Kachemak team title; lead by five Bulldogs who earned conference championships in-route-to the conference team championship.
Nikiski recorded 213 team points through the two-day competition at Seward High School; outdistancing Valdez and third-place Skyview.
Nikiski’s five champions included: Josh Brown at 145 pounds; Kaden Spurgeon at 152 pounds; Corey Green won the 160 pound weight class; Lincoln Johnson takes the 182 class; and Henry Eide took first in the heavyweight class. Nikiski qualified 11 athletes to the 1-2-3A state championships, which are Friday and Saturday at Nikiski. Also advancing to state were Dakoda Neely (113), Tyler Handley (113), Trey Zimmerman (120), Mike Stangel (138), Morgan Sauve (160) and Orry Hyatt (195).
Skyview High School placed six wrestlers into the championship final; however, no Panthers claimed top honors. Hannah Hutchison placed second at 106; TJ Checketts at 126; Cody Williams was the runner-up at 152; Sam Janorschke,132; Alex Rodriguez, 182 and John Alexander, heavyweight. Austin Craig (106) and Jacob Lawson (220) earned third-place finishes for Skyview and advanced to state.
