A group of community members in Nikiski is rallying to spread the word about the proposed Law Enforcement Service Area.

Ann Krogseng and her husband’s business, A A Dan’s, was burglarized last year which spurred her into action.

A community meeting on property crimes demonstrated that many of her neighbors had been also.

Krogseng: “After the community meeting there were individuals who wanted to work on the issue so a committee was developed and we met, gosh, from September until February looking at all the options that were possibly available to us. We looked at additional troopers, we covered everything that we possibly could and what we came down to is all in all the best solution for us was taking care of ourselves by establishing our own Law Enforcement Service Area.”

Now an ordinance has been brought forward to create that LESA, which if approved by the Kenai Peninsula Borough Assembly would put a mill rate increase and the Service Area Board members on the October ballot.

Krogseng: “Seward’s budget, basically most closely replicated our community in size so we came up with the mill rate of 1.5 and that’s basically $150 per $100,000 of assessment.”

A special committee was formed to take public testimony on the ordinance at a meeting next Thursday, June 4, at 6 pm in the Nikiski Recreation Center.
