You may look a little silly, but the Coast Guard says “Wear Your Life Jacket to Work Day” is no laughing matter.
Next Friday, Alaskans are encouraged to wear their PFDs, as a reminder of summertime boating safety.

Capt. Fosdick: “A life jacket should fit, be in good condition, and always be accessible. Additionally, children 13 years of age or younger are required to wear a life jacket while they’re on a recreational vessel.”
According to the Alaska Boating Safety Program, five out of six victims of boating fatalities are adult males who drown in cold water. They say many could be saved by wearing a flotation device.
