After more than a decade of building and a $5 million grant, the Nikiski Senior Center finally opened its doors on Sunday.
The property was graciously donated by Nikiski homesteaders Jim and Nedra Evenson who said “why not?”
Nedra: “Well several years ago the senior center was considering building housing in the old property on Island Lake Road, well it was bounded by an air strip and a lumber yard and it was a most uninteresting property so we said, well we aren’t using this end of our lake, why not give them the land here, and there’s plenty of room to expand should they want to in future years.”
Jim: “We donated 7 acres of lake frontage where these apartments are, there are eight apartments in this building and just North of that and adjoining we sold them another 5 acres at less than market cost so they have both of those properties now.”
Borough Mayor Mike Navarre attended the grand opening who was more than thankful to everyone involved.
Mayor Navarre: “Ya know I want to thank the board members for the ink board and also the service area board executive directors that they’ve had over the years, its been a long time in the making and of course Jim and Nedra Evenson who donated this beautiful piece of property on which this facility sits and Mike Chenault the representative out here had a big hand in providing the funding so thanks to everyone for the effort they put in to get this constructed.”
