Murkowski Weighs in on Today’s Planned Gun Control Vote

Posted: April 17, 2013 at 7:34 am

As U.S. Senators will be voting today on proposed gun control regulations, U.S. Senator Lisa Murkowski has announced that she will not be supporting the Manchin-Toomey legislation and will instead support an alternative amendment proposed by Senator Chuck Grassley (R-IA)

The State’s senior senator said that Alaskans have been watching the Senate debate gun legislation closely, because they want to keep Americans safe as much as anyone but don’t believe they need to compromise their 2nd Amendment rights to get there.

Murkowski said that we all agree that we want to keep guns out of the hands of criminals and the mentally unstable, but there’s a number of paths to the same destination.  A lot of attention has been paid to the Manchin-Toomey amendment, but an alternative has been presented by Republican Senator Charles Grassley of Iowa.  Murkowksi believes his legislation is more in line with the views of Alaskans because it accomplishes our shared goals without adding any new steps or layers of bureaucracy for any law-abiding Alaskan who wants to purchase a firearm for sport or protection.

I am very disappointed that Lisa bowed to the extreme view that background checks are somehow an infringement of our 2nd amendment rights. Universal background checks are as simple as a car registration and are the only way for oversight of guns in the hands of criminals.
90% of Americans favored the checks and it is unconscionable that Congress turned their backs on the will of the people. Shame on you politicians!
This democrat was hoping that after Alaskans rose to support Lisa as an independent – that she would vote with that in mind!
Please don’t assist America in it’s regressive addiction to guns! Most Alaskans are gun owners and we still recognize that background checks are a mandatory move!
